Car Loan Total Cost Calculator

The sticker price is only part of what you pay. This tool adds sales tax and the common fees to get the out-the-door price, then works out the amount financed, the monthly payment, and the total cost of the loan.

How this calculator works

The sticker price is not what you pay. Sales tax, a documentation fee, a title fee, and a registration fee all sit on top, and the loan adds interest.

out-the-door = price + tax on (price − trade-in) + doc fee + title fee + registration fee

financed = out-the-door − down payment − trade-in, and payment = P × i ÷ (1 − (1 + i)^-n)

  • P — the amount financed
  • i — the monthly rate, the annual rate divided by 1,200
  • n — the number of monthly payments

Total cost adds the down payment, the trade-in, and every payment. It does not include insurance, fuel, or maintenance. Enter the tax and fee figures from your own deal.

What changes your result

Only a few inputs move the number materially. In rough order of impact:

Enter the rate you were actually offered. This site is not a lender and does not publish rates — a quoted rate is only meaningful next to the term and the amount financed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the out-the-door price?
It is the vehicle price plus sales tax and the fees that must be paid to complete the purchase, before any down payment or trade-in is applied.
Which fees should I include?
Include the documentation fee, title fee, and registration fee from your own deal. Names and amounts vary by state and dealer, so use the figures you were quoted.
Is sales tax charged on the full price?
In many states the trade-in reduces the taxable amount, so tax is charged on the price minus the trade-in. Rules vary, so check your state.
What is not included in the total?
Insurance, fuel, maintenance, and any optional add-ons are not included. The tool covers the purchase price, tax, the fees you enter, and loan interest.
