What a car loan actually costs

The sticker price is not the loan. These are the four components a lender finances, and the two that decide what you really pay.

The components of a financed car purchase
ComponentWhat it isNegotiable?
Vehicle priceThe agreed price of the car, before tax and feesYes — negotiate this first
Sales taxState and local tax on the taxable amount (usually price minus trade-in)No — set by state law
Title, registration and doc feesGovernment fees plus the dealer's documentation feeGovernment fees no; doc fee sometimes
Add-onsGAP, service contracts, paint and fabric protectionYes — decline anything you do not want
APRThe yearly cost of credit, including fees, not just the interest rateYes — by shopping lenders
TermHow many months you spread the balance overYes — and it changes total interest most

The monthly payment is a symptom, not the price. A 72-month loan can halve the payment and still cost thousands more than a 48-month loan on the same car.

Where to get financed

You are not limited to the dealership's financing desk, and you should not treat it as the default.

Dealer, bank or credit union

Understand the rules where you live

Pricing follows your credit profile, but the rate caps, title-lending rules and licensing that protect you are set by your state. Every figure we publish carries its publisher and a link to the primary source.

How AutoLoanable works

  1. We publish the math, not the marketing

Every calculator uses the standard amortization and APR formulas and is tested against independently computed values.

  2. We cite primary sources only

Rate caps, title-loan rules and licensing come from state legislatures, state regulators, the CFPB, the FTC and the Federal Reserve — never from a lender or an aggregator.

  3. We never guess a number

When an official figure does not exist, the page shows the source link and tells you to check the latest published value instead of printing an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

How does AutoLoanable make money?
AutoLoanable is an independent publisher. When you click through to a lending partner we may receive a referral fee. That fee does not change the rate you are offered, and it never changes what we publish — see our affiliate disclosure.
Does AutoLoanable lend money?
No. AutoLoanable is not a lender, a dealer, a broker, or a credit repair service. We publish car-loan calculators, guides and sourced state reference data so you can compare offers from lenders you choose yourself.
Does using AutoLoanable affect my credit score?
No. AutoLoanable does not pull your credit and does not process applications. Any credit inquiry happens at the lender you choose, and many lenders use a soft pull for pre-qualification that does not affect your score.
What APR will I get on a car loan?
Auto-loan APRs vary widely with your credit history, the vehicle, the term and whether the car is new or used. Rather than quote a number we cannot stand behind, we show you how APR is calculated and link to the Federal Reserve's published consumer-credit data so you can see current market levels.
